Cades Cove is an isolated cove or valley of approximately 2500 acres located in the Tennessee section of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Eastern Tennessee. It is a beautiful, serene, sheltered area with a mixture of forests, meadows, streams, waterfalls and an outdoor museum. The cove was once home to numerous settlers before the formation of the national park in 1935. Today, Cades Cove is the most popular area for visitors to the park, attracting two million or more visitors a year. Cades Cove is a living, natural outdoor museum with well preserved homesteads, scenic mountain views, fascinating history and an abundant display of wildlife. The Cades Cove Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Cades Cove has been preserved by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to look the same as it looked in the 1800's in order to give vistors a genuine feel for life in the pioneer times in this area. The Cove was once home to a small mountain community whose settlers came mainly from East Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia. It is a fitting tribute to the hearty people who once lived and died here in the heart of the Smokies.
